From Burnout to Beats: Why This Boss is Taking a Hot Mess Break at RiverBeat

Whew, chile… being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. Between emails, launches, packing orders, and pretending I remember what “work-life balance” feels like—I had to hit pause. Not a soft pause. I’m talking Beyoncé, mic-drop, two-snaps-and-a-spin PAUSE.

So what’s a girl to do? Pack a bag, grab the glitter, and head to the RiverBeat Music Festival in Memphis, TN!

Because let’s be real—this Hot Mess needed a reset.

As the founder of A Hot Mess Candle Co., I wear many hats: creative director, customer service rep, shipping department, and hype woman. But sometimes, the biggest flex is knowing when to rest. So this weekend, I’m swapping spreadsheets for sound checks, product labels for playlists, and stress for self-care.

Here’s why taking a break isn’t just self-care—it’s strategy:

1. You Can’t Pour from an Empty Candle Jar

Let’s keep it cute and honest. Burnout is real. And if your flame is out, your vision can’t shine. I realized I’d been giving so much to my business that I left myself running on fumes. Music, laughter, fresh air, and vibing with folks who aren’t asking about inventory levels? Yes, please!

2. Creativity Lives in Joy

Some of my best candle scent names (shoutout to Everything But the Cookie and 90s Men) were born out of joy and play—not pressure. This weekend is about soaking up inspiration, catching vibes, and reminding myself why I started this in the first place: to spark joy and conversation.

3. Fun is Fuel

We didn’t become entrepreneurs to be miserable. We built these businesses to create freedom—time, energy, and lifestyle. If we don’t claim some of that freedom along the way, then what’s the point? So yes, I will be dancing, eating everything fried, and probably screaming lyrics I only half-know. And I will NOT feel guilty about it.

4. Showing Up For Yourself is Part of the Legacy

I want my nephews, my future team, and my community to know that hustle and healing can coexist. That it's okay to build something powerful and take a breather. That joy is revolutionary, especially for Black entrepreneurs who are constantly expected to grind without pause.

So if you need me this weekend, I’ll be the one in Memphis with glitter on my cheeks, barbecue in hand, and not a single spreadsheet in sight.

Because rest is the real glow-up.

Because fun is a form of freedom.

Because this Hot Mess deserves a little melody before the next masterpiece.

Now pass me the mic—and the sunscreen.
